Popcorn, Thneeds & Moustaches

Even though we moved out of Dana Point this past year, it still feels like home and we are more than happy to take advantage of the local offerings. Each June the city puts on some fun family movies in the park (which just happens to overlook the ocean and harbor). We made it to two of them this year: Mary Poppins (which the boys didn’t quite make it through) and the Lorax (which Hutch knows, loves and Rebecca had purposely not shown him for a while so it all felt new). Each week we went we got to hang out with some fun friends as well; it was a lot of fun.

Week 1: “Mary Poppins” with Sharon and Steve Hughes and their little boy Graden

(thanks to Sharon for the photos)

Observations:

  • Free popcorn is a great idea (the boys couldn’t stop).
  • There’s a reason everyone has one of those Costco “Tommy Bahama” chairs.
  • 45 minutes of pink princesses singing songs about their confidence and true beauty on the inside was just a little much… 2 songs would have sufficed.
  • Though Mary Poppins was great, an HD projection and really good sound made it all fall apart a little more for me, especially once I realized it was a simliar time period to the BBC Downton Abbey series. Let’s just say it may have been in the same period, but they never would have socialized with the Crawleys.
  • Oakes is prone to wander.

Week 2: “The Lorax” with Lauren and Steven Shaw

Cute little boys enjoying their movie

(I had my camera, so here’s a few more photos)

Observations:

  • Free popcorn just gets better and better.
  • Brought A chair; it helped ONE of us (thanks babe).
  • Unhealthy snacks are more fun than healthy ones.
  • It’s getting harder to hide our chocolate from Hutch.
  • Newer fast paced animation with booming songs and orange guys with big mustaches beats English nannies with magical carpet bags every time at garnering little boys attentions.
  • I could never grow a mustache that big.
  • Oakes just gets better at wandering.

Looking forward to next year’s movies in the park. I hope you’ll join us!
